Originally constructed in 1950 to connect Sterling, Soldotna, Cooper Landing, and the Seward Highway, the Old Sterling Highway was later replaced by the modern route. What remains today is a well-established two-track dirt and rocky trail system open year-round to ATVs, UTVs, and 4×4 vehicles. During winter months, portions convert into a multi-use ski trail.
